Lecture series at the University of Vechta: Focus on children and their living environments!

The University of Vechta is starting a fascinating lecture series entitled “Children and Living Environments” in the 2025 summer semester. This lecture series is aimed at students, teachers and interested parties and takes place every Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Q building (room Q016), Driverstraße 22, University of Vechta; some lectures are also offered online. The series is organized by Prof. Dr. Steffen Wittkowske and Michael Otten, supported by the Vechta Community Foundation and the University Society.

The first topic will be on April 8, 2025 by Prof. Dr. Nina Skorsetz-Gumprecht (University of Kassel) with the title “Didn’t you bring anything with you?” treated. The lecture aims to shed light on the topic of life-world orientation in non-fiction lessons, with the focus on the students' subjective experiences. Lifeworld orientation is an approach that focuses on the children's perspective and recognizes their everyday experiences and knowledge models.

Aims of the lecture series

The goal of this lecture series is to promote accessibility to educational content without relying solely on an academic perspective. According to Kahlert (2004), children's world is described as subjective and not universally applicable. This approach is intended to prepare the learning content in the area of tension between children and the topics covered, so that their individual realities of life are taken into account.

The topics of the lecture series are complex. Other lectures include:

  • 15. April 2025: Prof. Dr. Steffen Wittkowske – „Lebenswelten – Zu Möglichkeiten und Deutungsmustern zwischen Tradition und Realität“.
  • 22. April 2025: Prof.in Dr.in Andrea Becher – „Erinnerungskultur als Teil der Lebenswelt von Kindern: Die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus im Sachunterricht thematisieren“.
  • 29. April 2025: Prof.in Dr.in Stine Albers (PH Heidelberg) – „Was wird zur Sache? Zum Kind in Schule und Sachunterricht“ (digitaler Vortrag).

Social changes and individualization

The lifeworld orientation is in an exciting context of the social changes that have been observed since the 1930s. Thiersch, born in 1935, documented how these changes influence individual lives and scope for action. Due to the individualization and pluralization of life paths, every path in life is now shaped more by personal decisions, which is accompanied by an increased degree of freedom, but also personal responsibility.

In a postmodern society, it is therefore essential that subject matter lessons integrate the diverse lives of children. There is no longer a universal recipe for a successful life, which means that learning must be made more flexible and adaptable. The challenge is to integrate this plurality into lessons and to offer children spaces to develop their own perspectives.

Further information and ongoing dates for this lecture series can be found on the University of Vechta website. The series of lectures promises a deep insight into the lives of children and their importance for education.
