Six magical animated films reveal the fairytale world of the Brothers Grimm!

On June 13, 2025, GRIMMWELT Kassel will celebrate a special anniversary. On the tenth anniversary of its existence, exciting initiatives are being presented that celebrate the legacy of the Brothers Grimm. As part of an anniversary campaign under the motto “Keep telling,” the institution is focusing on the Brothers Grimm’s storytelling art. The aim is to make the fantastic space of fairy tales and their reception visible in a wide variety of media such as film, theater, literature and comics. The audience and society are invited to continue spinning the fairy tales and their archetypal stories and to celebrate together.

A special highlight of the anniversary celebrations are the six animated films that were created in cooperation with students from the animation class at the Kassel Art University. These films interpret the magic and meaning of the Grimm fairy tales as well as the architecture of the exhibition hall. The project started last year and the students had the opportunity to spend a day in the GRIMM WORLD to make films and develop ideas.

Creative contributions from students

The results are six unique short films that will be shown in the GRIMMWELT permanent exhibition from June 1, 2025. They are also available on the GRIMMWELT YouTube channel and offer new perspectives on the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales. Talented filmmakers were involved in this project, including Lilian Gremmer, Stella Hood, Seymoure Konneman, Gülberk Elif Bosgelmez, Malin Gutschank, Luna Hirt and Stefan Kreller. Project supervision was carried out by Prof. Martina Bramkamp and Franka Sachse, while the cooperation was carried out by the Museumsverband Hessen e. V. was funded.

For centuries, the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales have been more than just stories; they function as healing stories for adults and children. They address people's existential problems in a symbolic form. The stories are often about injustice and violence, but in children's fairy tales the good always wins, offering readers identification and hope. In order to preserve the deep symbolism in the content, it is important that illustrated editions keep these elements alive and create space for children's imagination as well as factual information.

An invitation to join in

Through the anniversary campaign “Tell on,” the GRIMMWELT Kassel invites the audience to experience the works of the Brothers Grimm as well as the world of language and fairy tales. The institution is actively committed to not only preserving the art of storytelling in a classic form, but also to opening up new paths and perspectives. The magic of fairy tales lives through the connection between tradition and contemporary reception and therefore remains a central component of cultural identity and creativity.
