The future doesn't stand still: 3.4 million euros for digital education in Kiel!

On March 18, 2025, Schleswig-Holstein announced important progress in the area of ​​digital education. The Kiel Digital Learning Campus (DLC) joins forces with various institutions to make future skills understandable and implementable for all citizens. The funded institutions are diverse and contribute to strengthening the digital educational landscape: The Christian Albrechts University of Kiel (CAU) will receive 2.008 million euros as coordinator. Other recipients are the Schleswig-Holstein Cooperative State University (DHSH) with 413,000 euros, the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) with 381,000 euros, the Technical Academy Nord e.V. with 331,000 euros and the Förde-VHS of the city of Kiel with 315,000 euros. All funding recipients contribute 10 percent of the overall project.

Project EDIT and its goals

The EDIT project, which stands for “Experience Spaces: Digital. Inclusive. Transformative”, aims to make the digital transformation in the region tangible. As part of the initiative, joint learning spaces will be set up on the CAU campus and at partners' sites. Topics include education for sustainable development, learning through engagement, social entrepreneurship and citizen science.

The physical learning locations include the Seeburg, the CAU Central Library, the CAU Technical Faculty and institutions such as the Technical Academy North, BUND SH and Förde VHS. There are also other DLC learning location associations in Kiel, such as the “DLC Art Lab” and the SEE-digital consortium. Complementing these initiatives will be a coordinating DLC ​​development hub located under the website dlc.sh constructed.

Investments and collaborations

Over the next five years, a total of 37.5 million euros will be invested to create learning and collaboration platforms as well as physical learning spaces. The thematic orientation of these investments focuses on future skills and learning future skills. Universities work closely with partners from business and society.

In addition, the DLC offers an extensive trainer program that enriches the variety of learning opportunities. The topics range from artificial intelligence to computer science to social & media. This free and flexible continuing education offer ends with an exam. Successfully tested participants receive a certificate and are qualified as DLC trainers. The aim is to provide trainers with uniform qualifications in order to make learning engaging and conducive to discovery.
