200 years of KIT: A look at the history and future of innovation!

On September 12, 2025, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) will celebrate its 200th anniversary. On the occasion of this important anniversary, an extensive illustrated book was published entitled "200 Years - 100 Objects. Parts of the Whole. Selected Objects on the History of KIT". [KIT] reports that the catalog covers the exhibition of the same name at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe documented. It offers a deep insight into the development of KIT and is now available in bookstores.

The hardcover volume comprises around 350 pages and presents 100 exhibits from the exhibition, each accompanied by around half a page of text. These objects come from the KIT archive and were also collected via an internal call. The exhibits not only provide insights into academic research and teaching, but also into cultural life and everyday life at KIT.

Diverse approaches to the history of science

The catalog offers different approaches: linearly arranged content, thematic focuses, image series and even 3D visualizations. The aim is to make a lasting contribution to the culture of remembrance and the visibility of the history of science. Available for 54 euros, the catalog is already seen as a significant element of the anniversary.

The anniversary exhibition itself runs until October 19, 2025 at the ZKM. In addition, online access to the exhibition will be provided until 2030, so that many interested parties can immerse themselves in the history of KIT.

A look into the future

In addition to the exhibition, other activities are planned under the motto “Shaping the Future – Research | Teaching | Transfer”. These include lectures, dialogue formats, workshops and special events that focus on looking back at two centuries of KIT as well as an outlook on future developments. [Cityofmediaarts] emphasizes that this is not just about honoring previous successes, but also about an intensive examination of the institute's role in future educational and research landscapes.

The opening ceremony for the anniversary exhibition took place on April 11, 2025 and set the framework for the celebrations. At the same time, the exhibition illustrates the identity of the KIT and the development of its predecessor institutions since 1825. The visual and thematic review is seen as an important element in bringing visitors closer to the evolutionary journey of the KIT.

The initiatives and publications surrounding the anniversary not only symbolize the past, but also open up perspectives for the future development of KIT within the German and international scientific landscape. [Hof] adds that such anniversaries always enable reflection on the place of universities in society and underline the relevance of research and teaching.

Since its founding, KIT has not only established itself as a leading technical university, but also plays a central role in research and academic training today. The 200th anniversary celebrations are a testament to the Institute's continued influence in the scientific community and beyond.
