Discover nature: BioBlitz in the Ulm Botanical Garden is starting soon!

A nationwide BioBlitz will take place in the Botanical Garden of Ulm University from June 14th to 22nd, 2025. This event, organized by the Association of Botanical Gardens, invites citizens to take part in species exploration. Using the free app iNaturalist, participants can document, identify and upload wild species. The aim of the campaign is not only to record biological diversity, but also to promote a closer relationship between people and nature.

With an area of 28 hectares, the Botanical Garden in Ulm is one of the most species-rich gardens in the German-speaking region. It currently occupies second place in Europe in terms of the number of species observations, while in comparison to other botanical gardens in Frankfurt it even occupies the top position. As of 2020, over 1,100 wild species have been documented on iNaturalist. The garden aims to become one of the top ten gardens in German-speaking countries.

Events during the action week

  • Am 15. Juni: Vogelführung um 6:00 Uhr.
  • Workshop „250 Arten in 2 Stunden?“ am 15. Juni um 17:30 Uhr (wiederholt am 17. Juni).
  • Am 22. Juni: „Final Countdown“ mit Führungen zu verschiedenen Zeiten, die Wald-, Wiesen- und Teichbiotope erkunden.

Registration for the tours on June 22nd is not required, which makes participation easier.

Presentation of the results

The collected results will be presented at the summer festival on June 29th between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The aim is to recognize the diversity and importance of the documented species and to raise awareness of the need to protect biodiversity.

The event is hosted by Dr. Mark Benecke supported as patron, emphasizing the importance of biological diversity and the role of botanical gardens in urban nature documentation. These gardens are not only places for learning, but also actively contribute to the preservation of biodiversity.

Several botanical gardens across Germany are taking part in this initiative, including the Ecological Botanical Garden in Bayreuth, which also runs a nature conservation monitoring project on iNaturalist. Prizes are offered for participants to create additional incentives for participation. Further information is available on the Association of Botanical Gardens website: verband-botanischer-gaerten.de.

In this nationwide species hunt, the focus is not only on having fun with nature, but also on the opportunity to actively contribute to the recording and protection of flora and fauna.
