Freshers' party in the Europa-Park Stadium: Freiburg welcomes the new ones!

On October 14, 2025, the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg's Freshers' Day took place in the Europa-Park Stadium of SC Freiburg. Around 3,500 new students, accompanied by friends and families, were welcomed on this special day. The atmosphere was characterized by anticipation and a sense of optimism. Among the new students are Lasse Ghadimi, who moved to Freiburg from Göttingen, Milla Bhagavan, who is studying to become a teacher in German and English, and Hannah Nortey, who is starting her law studies in the university city.

Lasse Ghadimi in particular was positive about his new fellow students and the city. Milla Bhagavan appreciates the proximity to her homeland and describes Freiburg as a “cool city”, while Hannah Nortey came from Hamburg to gain more independence and redesign her life in Freiburg.

Festive welcome

The day began with a welcome from Prof. Dr. Stefan Rensing, Vice Rector for Research and Innovation. He encouraged the new students to become actively involved in campus life and to take advantage of the numerous support offers. The welcome was complemented by Hanno Franke, head of marketing and sustainability at SC Freiburg, and Bundesliga player Svenja Fölmli.

A special highlight was the dance performance “Daughter”, presented by the Matrix show team from the Institute of Sport and Sports Science, which rounded off the official part of the event. After the welcome, the new students had the opportunity to find out about various offers at the “Market of Opportunities”. Institutions such as the Student Service Center and the International Office were represented here, and there was information about student communities such as the University Big Band and Nightline, a listening telephone run by students for students.

Program and offers

Freshers' Day offered a varied program, which began with admission at 1 p.m. The official welcome speakers followed at 2 p.m., followed by a livestream that was open to anyone interested. A university shop offered clothing, accessories and stationery on site and online. The first-year students also received a free ticket for a SC Freiburg home game in the Dreisamstadion, which was given out at the entrance in the form of a voucher subscription.

Finally, the event shows the efforts to offer new students a successful start and to introduce them to the university community. The friendly atmosphere and extensive information provided made the event a real highlight for the first-year students. The case of the large University of Freiburg is an example of the successful integration policy and support for students, as can also be found at other universities, such as the University of Augsburg, where a central introductory event for first-year students takes place in order to comprehensively prepare them for their studies uni-augsburg.de reported.
