Inclusion in focus: New opportunities for people with disabilities in education!
The AW-ZIB, the Academy for Science and Inclusion, was founded in 2020 and is a central component of teacher training at universities in Baden-Württemberg. The aim of this institute is to raise comprehensive awareness of the concerns of people with disabilities and to actively promote the implementation of inclusion in the education system. At the AW-ZIB, people with and without disabilities work together in teaching, research and transfer, which underlines the institute's inclusive approach. This is reported by the PH Heidelberg.
A central element of the work of the AW-ZIB is the qualification to become an educational specialist. In this context, education professionals report on topics such as exclusion, participation and inclusive learning. They not only design educational offerings and give lectures, but also actively participate in research projects. The first round of qualification took place between 2017 and 2020 in the “Inclusive Education Baden-Württemberg” project, from which five of today’s six qualified educational specialists come. There are currently two women in the AW-ZIB who have been training to become educational specialists since 2022 and are expected to graduate in the summer semester of 2025.
Growing demand for inclusive educational offerings
The demand for inclusive educational offerings is constantly growing. That's why the next qualification round will start in October 2025. The qualification lasts a total of three years and involves a weekly visit of five days to the PH Heidelberg, while the participants continue to work in their workshop for disabled people. The content taught includes communication, presentation, reflection on life stories, inclusion pedagogical basics and teamwork. This particularly targets cognitively impaired people who are interested in inclusive educational work. Individual support is provided by a multi-professional team at the AW-ZIB.
The application requires previous work in a workshop for disabled people. Women are strongly encouraged to apply. The application documents, consisting of a completed application form and a maximum three-minute motivational video, must be submitted to the AW-ZIB by May 30, 2025 at the latest. Further information is available on the website PH Heidelberg available.
Inclusion at universities in Hamburg
In addition to the activities in Baden-Württemberg, work is also being done in Hamburg to qualify people with disabilities. Here, HAA Hamburger Arbeitsassistenz gGmbH is pursuing a project that is supported by a grant of €326,820 from Aktion Mensch. This project runs from October 2024 to September 2027 and aims to train eight people with disabilities to become educational specialists who work at Hamburg universities subject to social insurance contributions and actively help shape inclusion.
The training location is the University of Applied Sciences (HAW) in Hamburg. The training is based on the guidelines of the Institute for Inclusive Education and is divided into an entry and a qualification phase. The introductory phase lasts three months and includes finding groups and getting to know the rooms and social space. This is followed by the qualification phase, which begins in January 2025 and lasts 33 months. In this phase, the participants are introduced to university practice and take on educational tasks such as: Human Action reported.
Overall, it can be seen that inclusion in the education system is making progress in both Baden-Württemberg and Hamburg. The holistic training and integration of people with disabilities in educational institutions is not only a currently growing demand, but also an important step on the way to an integrative society.
