Anniversary in education: A life for research and teaching!
On March 8, 2025, the Heidelberg University of Education can celebrate five decades of commitment from Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Gerd-Bodo von Carlsburg looks back. He has been a professor of general education at the university since March 1, 1975. During this time, he not only initiated and consistently expanded scientific relationships with universities in the Baltic States, but also left his unmistakable stamp on the academic landscape.
Born in Dresden in 1942, von Carlsburg completed a teaching degree at the University of Hamburg. After completing his doctorate in 1972 and his first professional positions at the Lichtwarkschule in Hamburg and the University of Wuppertal, he found his professional home at the Heidelberg University of Education. Here he was director of the institute and dean of the faculty for several years.
Honors and merits
His contribution to the academic community has been recognized through numerous awards. These include an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Educational Sciences in Vilnius in 1995 and from Tallinn University in 1999. In December 2023 he was honored by the Vytautas Magnus University for his life's work. This honor includes a certificate and medal for his services to the partnership between universities in Lithuania and Germany. He also received the first Golden Migratory Bird from the Heidelberg University of Education in 2012.
Von Carlsburg is also a sought-after editor and has published over three dozen volumes of Baltic Studies in Education and Social Science. As President of the World Association for the Renewal of Education, he is committed to contemporary pedagogical practice and the exchange of innovative ideas.
International connections
His international visiting professorships in Lithuania and Estonia reflect his intercultural approach to educational research. His research interests in particular, which range from intercultural educational research to comparative educational research, demonstrate his commitment to international exchange. His research projects address, among other things, the dynamics of transnationalization and the social consequences of pluralization as well as educational policy challenges that arise from migration and social inequality.
The collaboration with the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg, where he served as a chair representative from 1982 to 1984, is another example of his diverse work. In 1991 he also received the Bundeswehr Cross of Honor in Gold for his services.
Gerd-Bodo von Carlsburg is not only a defining figure at the Heidelberg University of Education, but also a leading figure in the international education discussion. His unique career and ongoing contributions to education are an inspiration to future generations of educators.
