Climate change in focus: Expert group fights for the future of the earth!

The University of Freiburg has launched a new interdisciplinary program that deals with current developments in international politics, social and legal sciences as well as historical topics. As part of the Colloquium Politicum There will be various lectures covering a wide range of topics.

Diverse topics of the events

On November 3, 2025, Joseph Croitoru will speak about Hezbollah as Iran's shadow army at the gates of Israel.

International climate policy in focus

In the context of these events, the role of international climate policy is of particular importance. Every year, countries around the world meet in November and December for two-week negotiations to discuss climate policy. These conferences are part of the Multilevel Climate Governance, which operates at both national and global levels.

The urgency of action on climate change is underscored by the fact that global carbon dioxide emissions have tripled over the past three decades. Political discussions about global warming began in the 1970s, but it was not until the adoption of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which was adopted by 154 states in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, that the issue was seriously addressed internationally.

International climate negotiations and the IPCC report on the state of research in climate science aim to achieve a procedure that is binding under international law. Negotiations are often lengthy because all decisions must be made unanimously. Initiatives such as the International Alliance of Mayors, active since 2008, promote more ambitious agreements and contribute to political attention.
