LEGO World in Schwäbisch Gmünd: Children discover technology and science!
The enthusiasm for MINT topics (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology) is particularly important in Schwäbisch Gmünd. On September 29, 2025 it was announced that the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education has been a regional exhibitor of the FIRST® LEGO® League Explore for seven years. This initiative is aimed at children aged 6 to 10 and offers them the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of science in a playful way.
For the coming 2025/26 season, the event will now be held by the Sparkasse Foundation Ostalb supports. This was emphasized by Holger Kreuttner, the foundation's managing director, in a press release in which he emphasized the importance of STEM funding for the future of children. Support is seen as crucial to creating sustainable learning and development opportunities.
Program content and activities
The FIRST® LEGO® League Explore program broadens the horizons of young participants. The children learn through discovery and explore a wide range of topics such as recycling, energy and the coexistence of people and animals. The teams build motorized models and create research posters that they present at the final exhibition.
The highlight of the program will be a major exhibition on February 28, 2026 PH Schwäbisch Gmünd be. The project is organized by Prof. Silke Ladel, who teaches mathematics, and junior professor Jan Winkelmann, who works in physics. Both are extremely grateful for the support from Sparkassenstiftung Ostalb.
Commitment of student teachers
A notable component of the program is the commitment of the student teachers who work with the children. Anna Nothnagel is one of the students actively participating in the project. In addition, Xenia Liedtke from the Alemannenschule in Hüttlingen has worked with teams in the LEGO AG since 2018/19, which shows how close the cooperation between schools and universities is.
The previous project “You can count on us!” has already achieved great success and reached many children in the Ostalb district. This continuity in MINT funding is important in order to strengthen the interest and skills of young generations in the natural sciences.
