Novel approaches in the fight against macular degeneration: light on the horizon!
Dr. Julian Wolf and his team at the University of Freiburg are starting a research project on age-related macular degeneration in order to develop targeted therapies.

Novel approaches in the fight against macular degeneration: light on the horizon!
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the most common causes of central vision loss worldwide. Dr. Julian Wolf from the University Medical Center Freiburg said he was pleased about the funding needed to research this serious disease, which currently affects around 200 million people. Scientists expect this number to increase to around 300 million by 2040. The aim of current research activities is to gain a deeper understanding of the disease in order to be able to develop more specific therapies. The loss of central vision has a significant impact on the independence and quality of life of those affected.
Dr. Wolf emphasizes the urgency of being able to intervene early to avoid serious visual impairments. A particular challenge in research is the impossibility of taking traditional tissue samples from the retina without endangering vision. Instead, the research team uses innovative liquid biopsies obtained from the eye's aqueous humor during eye surgery. These samples make it possible to study the composition of the proteins and the activity of the surrounding cells.
Innovative approaches to research
The study uses machine learning to draw conclusions about changed cell types and signaling pathways in different stages of the disease. Prof. Dr. Lutz Hein emphasizes that there is a close connection between basic and clinical research at the University Medical Center Freiburg. The aim is to benefit patients in the long term through the knowledge gained. Prof. Dr. Thomas Reinhard is particularly pleased about the implementation of the project at the Department of Ophthalmology, supported by the German Research Foundation.
Despite advances in research, those affected by the dry form of macular degeneration continue to face major challenges because there is currently no effective treatment for it. According to the AOK, important measures for those affected are to find out about the course of the disease and to have regular check-ups. Certain high-dose dietary supplements such as beta-carotene, vitamins C and E, and zinc are promoted as promising, but clear evidence of their preventative effects is lacking.
Practical tips for those affected
Adapting the living environment can be of great importance for those affected, for example by creating better lighting to avoid the risk of falls. In addition, support in everyday life, for example with housework or shopping, can be helpful in maintaining independence and quality of life. These adjustments are crucial in order to be able to lead as normal a life as possible despite the illness. Further information can be found on the Freiburg University Medicine website.
