New areas of study: Korea in the focus of higher education!
Universities in Germany are responding to the increasing interest in Korean culture and society. Especially that one University of Heidelberg has recognized this and established a new focus in the field of Korean studies. This focus is led by Prof. Dr. Anja Senz, who leads the working group at the Center for East Asian Studies. The aim of this initiative is to do justice to Korea's increasing importance as a partner for Germany.
The Korean Studies major offers a comprehensive education that includes intensive language courses and modules such as “Korea today”, “Korea global” and “Expertise Korea”. Students are required to critically analyze current structures in Korea and to link historical, cultural and social developments in the East Asian context. A special feature of the program is a “mobility window” that enables students to stay abroad at Korean partner universities.
Study structure and requirements
The course is designed to last six semesters, with the first part of the course lasting four semesters and the second part of the course lasting two semesters. Students in the minor have the opportunity to choose between linguistic and technical training. Admission to the bachelor's degree program in East Asian Studies with a focus on Korean Studies is open, but enrollment for the winter semester 2025/2026 must be completed by October 13, 2025.
Specific requirements must be met for the master's degree program in the field of Korean Studies or East Asian Studies. This includes a bachelor's degree with corresponding study components and proof of English (level B2 GER). The master strengthens the social scientific examination of Korea in the East Asian context, promotes independent scientific research and offers various modules that prepare students for a career in international relations, education and communication.
In-depth perspectives and promotion
The Free University of Berlin supplements this offer with a master's degree course, which enables the knowledge from the bachelor's degree to be deepened and expanded. Modules include, among others, “Scientific Korean Research” and “Interdisciplinary and Transregional Areas”. There is also the option of writing a master's thesis to independently work on a research question.
In addition, it offers Goethe University Frankfurt the opportunity to do a doctorate in Korean studies. There are a variety of topics of interest here that deal with modern questions about migration, gender and the construction of South Korean identity. Those interested can find information about the new doctoral regulations on the university's website and can contact Prof. Dr. Yonson Ahn turn.
Overall, these developments reflect the growing interest in the social science studies of Korean culture and offer students numerous opportunities to deepen their knowledge and subsequent professional integration.
