New Rector of the University of Hohenheim: Christoph Schneider takes over!

On June 27, 2025, Prof. Dr. Christoph Schneider was unanimously elected as the new rector of the University of Hohenheim, with only one abstention. This choice was necessary after Prof. Dr. Stephan Dabbert died unexpectedly on October 1, 2024. The 60-year-old Schneider, who is currently Vice President for Research and Professor of Climate Geography at the Humboldt University in Berlin, now faces the task of further developing the university over the next eight years. His term is expected to begin in fall 2025.

In his acceptance speech after the election, Schneider emphasized the importance of the entire university and the collective progress that is based on it. Dr. Susanne Herre, chairwoman of the university council, praised Schneider as an “excellent scientist and experienced science manager”. His path to the election of rector was the result of a public advertisement carried out by the search committee. In the open university meeting of the Senate and University Council, Schneider received eight yes votes in the University Council and 34 yes votes and one abstention in the Senate.

Scientific career

Prof. Dr. Christoph Schneider was born on February 27, 1965 in Blaustein-Herrlingen and studied geography and physics at the University of Freiburg from 1986 to 1993. After receiving his doctorate in 1998 and his habilitation in 2004, Schneider worked as a professor of physical geography and climatology at RWTH Aachen University until 2015. He has been a professor of climate geography at Humboldt University since 2015 and was appointed Vice President for Research in 2021.

His research focuses on the effects of climate change on the cryosphere and urban climate. Prof. Schneider has led extensive projects in polar regions and high mountains, including Svalbard, Patagonia and Tibet. He is also a founding member of the Scientists for Future initiative.

Personal

Schneider comes from a mountaineering family and is married. He has two adult daughters and three grandchildren. With his experience in climate research and his commitment to science, he will lead the University of Hohenheim through the challenges of the coming years.
