Quantum year 2025: Discover the future of technology and science!

In 2025, the world of quantum science and technology will receive special recognition. The German Physical Society (DPG) has declared this year an international quantum year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of quantum physics. This was officially announced by the DPG on August 11, 2025. The Department of Physics University of Konstanz was named “Quantum Location 2025” in this context.

The DPG honors a total of 100 locations in Germany for their outstanding contributions to research, teaching and science communication in the field of quantum technologies. Guido Burkard, Professor of Theoretical Solid State Physics and Quantum Information, emphasizes the relevance of this award for promoting knowledge about quantum technologies and their application. The University of Konstanz can look back on a long-standing tradition in the research of quantum physical phenomena, which also shapes central topics in its teaching.

Global Quantum Science Initiative

In addition to the national initiative, the UN General Assembly has declared 2025 the “International Year of Quantum Science and Quantum Technologies.” This initiative, supported by 57 countries, aims to highlight the significant contributions of quantum science to technological advances over the last 100 years. The DPG coordinates the activities in Germany and launched the campaign under the motto “Quantum2025 – 100 years are just the beginning…”.

The comprehensive program includes a variety of events aimed at bringing the topic of quantum mechanics closer to a broad public. This includes generally understandable lectures, training courses for teachers and creative formats such as concerts and poetry slams. The implementation of quantum mechanics has already contributed significantly to the development of modern technologies that are now used in everyday transactions, medical diagnostics and many other areas.

Planned events and subject areas

In Germany, the year 2025 will be dominated by quantum science. Different events are planned that focus on several thematic areas:

  • Quanten in der Forschung
  • Quanten spielerisch und in der Schule
  • Quanten in der Musik, Philosophie, Kunst und Literatur
  • Quanten in der Berufswelt
  • Historischer Weg in die moderne Quantenwelt

The opening of the quantum year is planned for January 14, 2025 in Berlin. In addition, the DPG autumn conference with a public supporting program will take place in Göttingen from September 8th to 12th, 2025. These events provide a platform to celebrate the impressive legacy of quantum mechanics while offering a glimpse of the future possibilities offered by the discipline.

Overall, the year 2025 is viewed as a significant chapter in the history of quantum science, illuminating both the rich past and challenging prospects for the future. A comprehensive awareness of the importance of quantum mechanics and access to education in this area will be at the center of global efforts. Further information on this is available on the DPG website.
