Top place for the University of Stuttgart in the 2025 sustainability ranking!
The University of Stuttgart currently has Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking 2025 achieved a remarkable achievement. With 99.9 out of 100 points in the “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure” category, the university continues its success from last year, when it was awarded 100 points and first place. Prof. Manfred Bischoff, Vice Rector for Research and Sustainable Development at the University of Stuttgart, says that the result is an incentive for the colleagues involved.
Overall, the University of Stuttgart took part in this comprehensive ranking for the second time, which evaluates the social impact of universities in the area of sustainability. For the first time, the university appeared in the overall list and immediately placed itself in the top 201-300 of around 2,300 universities, complementing its progress towards the United Nations' global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Participation and results
The examination is carried out in 17 categories, which the universities can choose themselves in order to submit their evidence. For the overall ranking, the top three sustainability areas of each university are taken into account in addition to SDG 17 “Partnership for the Goals”. This year, over 2,100 universities from 125 countries took part in the ranking. The University of Stuttgart was not only named the front runner in the “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure” category, but also achieved excellent results in the sustainability goals “Reducing Inequalities” (SDG 10), “Climate Protection” (SDG 13) and “Sustainable Cities and Communities” (SDG 11).
The British Magazine Times Higher Education highlights the significant improvements compared to the previous year, which underlines the university's efforts to consolidate its position in the field of sustainable development.
The context of the rankings
The THE Impact Ranking evaluates 2,526 universities from 130 countries and regions worldwide. The aim of the ranking is to measure the progress of educational institutions in relation to the SDGs. With this in mind, 2025 analyzed universities that demonstrate comprehensive excellence in global sustainable development. It turns out that universities in East and Southeast Asia play a prominent role, ranking as leaders in 10 out of 17 individual SDG rankings this year.
The University of Stuttgart is using the places it has won as motivation to further expand its initiatives and programs in the area of sustainable development. Continuous participation in the THE Impact Rankings is part of the strategy to strengthen social responsibility through education and research and to have a positive influence on society.
In the search for comprehensive excellence, the University of Stuttgart remains tireless in its mission. The results of this annual assessment could serve as a catalyst for future projects and joint partnerships to achieve global development goals.
