Demands for improvement
In the context of equality, it is important to consider the aspects of anti-discrimination and equal opportunities at universities. In June 2021, the State Asten Conference adopted a comprehensive list of demands. This emerged from a participatory process in which students raised their voices for better equality. The core demands include the need to prevent discrimination and enable discrimination-free studying, such as STU.VUS reported.
The University of Stuttgart is requested to concretely implement the central requirements from the catalog. Although the university's diversity strategy is welcomed, gaps in its implementation and reaching students are identified. It is necessary to address various forms of discrimination and expand advisory services, especially for FINTA*, LGBTQIA+, refugee and religious students.
Diversity as an opportunity
Promoting diversity at universities is seen as essential for equal opportunities and educational success. Various initiatives such as Diversity initiative at German universities, support universities in developing individual diversity strategies. Diversity enriches science and research through individual talents and multi-perspective experiences.
Universities play a central role in social developments. In order to ensure equal participation for all university members, numerous projects that are dedicated to diversity are supported. With over 33 funded projects, the initiative aims to intensify the exchange on diversity measures and share best practices.
Overall, the University of Stuttgart shows that it is on a promising path to strengthening equality and diversity in the university system, but must take the challenges seriously, for example in implementing the demands from the anti-discrimination catalogue.
