Cross of Merit for Dr. Alfons Siegel: A role model for social commitment!

Professor Dr. Alfons Siegel from Maselheim was awarded the Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on Friday evening in the district office. The award ceremony took place in the presence of around 200 guests who had received 150 invitations. Among those present were members of the Bundestag such as Martin Gerster (SPD), Josef Rief (CDU) and Anja Reinalter (Greens). District Administrator Mario Glaser congratulated Siegel and acknowledged his outstanding achievements in social, charitable and humanitarian areas.

The honor from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is a special recognition for Siegel, whose commitment extends beyond the borders of Biberach. The award of the Federal Order of Merit by bundespraesident.de described as the highest recognition for services to the common good, took place at a significant location. Glaser emphasized that the award is intended as a thank you for Siegel’s outstanding achievements for the common good.

Commitment and impact

Dr. Alfons Siegel, 77 years old, is a lecturer in political science at the Weingarten University of Education and has been an honorary professor since 2022. He has had an impressive academic career, with degrees in chemistry, theology, psychology, political science and adult education.

Siegel has been teaching at PH Weingarten since 1995. He is also co-founder of the Biberach Development Policy Working Group, which has been committed to social and political issues since 1973. In recent years, Siegel has distinguished itself in collaborations with projects in India, Tanzania and Ghana. His commitment to the Erzberger Initiative Biberach, which maintains the memory of the murdered politician Matthias Erzberger, is also noteworthy.

Acceptance speech and visions

In his acceptance speech, Siegel not only thanked him for the honor, but also spoke of the support he received from many people. He particularly mentioned Klaus Dollak, who initiated the application for the award. Siegel used the platform of his honor to appeal to those present to continue to work for justice and peace and emphasized the importance of cross-border solidarity.

Another personal concern of Siegel was the renaming of the square in front of the town hall to Matthias-Erzberger-Platz, which he described as a “long-awaited gift”.
