60 years of youth research: Girls dominate the competition in Regensburg!

The 60th round of the Jugend forscht Junior competition took place at the University of Regensburg on April 10th and 11th, 2025. This year, 90 participants presented a total of 56 projects in seven categories. These include the world of work, biology, chemistry, earth and spatial sciences, mathematics/computer science, physics and technology. A notable development this year was that for the first time more girls than boys took part in the competition. Dr. Stephan Giglberger, MINT representative at the University of Regensburg, was pleased with this positive trend.

The award winners in the various categories reflect the diversity and innovation of the research projects:

category Prize winner/prize winner project
biology Clara Proksch (12) “SaSa – Cleaner Sand”
Chemistry Hanna Panhans (13) & Elena Leyerer (13) “Why are our vegetables colorful?”
Mathematics/Computer Science Malte Rauschenbach (14) “Microprocessor design with software support”
physics Sophia Sitte (13) & Lilith Uphoff (14) “Airmuscle 2.0”

Special awards and ceremony

In addition to the main prizes, special prizes were awarded for various categories, including best interdisciplinary project and creativity in physics. Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Korber, Vice President of the University of Regensburg, emphasized the relevance of this competition for promoting young talent.

The award ceremony took place in lecture hall H36 of the Faculty of Physics and was accompanied musically by the wind quintet HighFive. As part of this event, Prof. Dr. Johannes Schildgen from OTH Regensburg gave a keynote speech on artificial intelligence, which gave the topic of the competition an additional dimension.

Preparation for the national final

The 60th national Jugend forscht competition is scheduled for the period from May 29th to June 1st, 2025 at the Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Bundeswehr Hamburg. The best projects from the state competitions, which took place in April 2025, are expected here. The diverse projects range from innovative approaches to processing AI language models to effective solutions for use in mechanical wheelchairs. A total of around 180 young scientists will take part and present over 100 projects.

The competition aims to promote the MINT skills of young talent. This is done through an initiative that is being implemented with the support of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The STEM Action Plan 2.0 focuses on strengthening STEM education through various measures, from early childhood to higher education and vocational training. One focus is on promoting the participation of girls and young women in these specialist areas.

The events surrounding Jugend forscht, especially the competitions, are not only a platform for presenting innovative ideas, but also play a crucial role in securing future skilled workers in the MINT areas. By honoring and promoting young talent through such competitions, an important foundation is laid for society to overcome challenges such as climate change, digitalization and combating diseases.
