Bamberg Rector Fischbach: Promotion to Rector of the Year”!

The German University Association (DHV) presented the “Rector of the Year” award for the seventeenth time today. Prof. Dr. Kai Fischbach, President of the Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg, achieved a remarkable third place with a grade of 1.82. This award recognizes the exemplary administration of the rectors and marks significant progress for Fischbach after he took sixth place last year. He is pleased with the result and sees this as recognition of the commitment of the entire University of Bamberg.

During Fischbach's term of office, over 50 professorships were filled, including 30 as part of the Bavarian High-Tech Agenda. Ten further appointment procedures are currently underway, which indicates dynamic and future-oriented university development. In addition, the university has recorded an increase in third-party funding of almost 40 percent since 2019. An example of a successfully acquired project is “InTra-Bau”, which deals with sustainable renovation.

A total of 3,026 scientists took part in this year's vote from November 11th to December 13th, 2024. Around 92 percent of Bamberg scientists rate Fischbach's administration positively. In comparison, only 67.6 percent of the other rectors rate their own university management largely positively. The average grade for German rectors is 2.83.

The award will be presented on March 31, 2025 as part of the German Science Gala in Berlin, a significant event for the entire university community.

Competition among principals

Prof. Manfred Bayer from TU Dortmund received the best rating with a grade of 1.45. Around 68.4 percent of those who voted rated Bayer as “the ideal person,” which underlines his outstanding leadership. In an interview, he discussed relevant challenges such as limited resources and growing competitive pressure. Also Prof. Dr. Susanne Menzel-Riedl from the University of Osnabrück was able to secure a place in the top field with a grade of 1.79.

The vote for Rector of the Year is part of a more comprehensive evaluation that also evaluates the university management within a time frame of one to six. The results reflect the current state of university leadership in Germany, where the average grade is 2.83 and is de facto a “satisfactory plus” rating, pointing to various challenges within the institutions.
