Bavaria is becoming a center for additive manufacturing – innovations start now!
On April 8, 2025, the founding of Bavaria Makes e.V. officially announced in Bavaria. This newly founded network has set itself the goal of industrializing additive manufacturing (AM) and would like to develop Bavaria into a leading high-tech location for this technology within ten years. Not only large companies and medium-sized businesses are taking part in the initiative, but also universities, research institutions and the innovation agency Bayern Innovativ.
Additive manufacturing, in which components are built up layer by layer, is characterized by its flexibility and freedom of design. These processes could have the potential to fundamentally transform industrial production by enabling complex geometries and transforming digital data into material products. The areas of application include medical technology, energy supply, aircraft construction, the defense industry as well as the semiconductor and automotive industries.
Government support and innovation promotion
The Bavarian state government is very committed and is supporting the project with significant financial support. An important component is the expansion of the Advanced Manufacturing Hub in Garching, where industry and research can work closely together. This also includes the co-location of Siemens technology experts on campus to promote hybrid manufacturing processes.
Another highlight of the commitment to additive manufacturing will be the “Next Generation Manufacturing” congress, which is planned for October 23 and 24, 2025 in Garching. Science Minister Markus Blume underlines Bavaria's pioneering role in the field of 3D printing and emphasizes the strategic importance of the new center.
Strong partners and research capacities
Numerous important players have come together as part of Bavaria Makes. These include companies like Colibrium additives, EOS GmbH, MTU Aero Engines AG, Oerlikon AM Europe GmbH, Siemens AG, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and toolcraft AG. Their common goal is to accelerate the transformation of research into industrial production.
TUM.Additive, a research group at the Technical University of Munich, employs over 30 professors who are investigating the future of additive manufacturing. This academic institution is closely linked to the TUM-Oerlikon Advanced Manufacturing Institute, which links academic and industrial research. The TUM Venture Labs also support over 100 start-ups in this promising area.
Bavaria's innovation agency, Bayern Innovativ GmbH, is strengthening the initiative with the creation of five new positions and funding of one million euros. This is part of ongoing efforts to establish a strong additive manufacturing ecosystem that includes successful companies and scientific institutes. Additive manufacturing is also a key focus in the New Materials cluster, which underlines the strategic direction of the Bavarian economy.
