Bundeswehr Inspector Breuer: Focus on innovative strength for security!

On March 26, 2025, General Carsten Breuer, the Inspector General of the Bundeswehr, visited the University of the Bundeswehr Munich (UniBw M). This visit served the purpose of scientific exchange and security policy networking. Prof. Eva-Maria Kern, the president of the university, received him and emphasized the role of UniBw M as a center for research and innovation in the security policy context. During his stay, Breuer found out about new technologies and projects that are important for both the Bundeswehr and the civil security architecture.

An essential part of the program was the presentation by Prof. Andreas Knopp on developments in the field of satellite communication. These highly secure communication solutions are intended not only for military but also for civilian applications, especially in crisis situations. An outstanding project in this area is SeRANIS (Seamless Radio Access Networks for Internet of Space), which aims to launch the “Athene 1” satellite. SeRANIS is the Bundeswehr's first LEO small satellite mission and includes over 20 experiments from different disciplines.

Palladion Defense Accelerator

Another focus of the visit was the Palladion Defense Accelerator, presented by Prof. Christian Trapp and Christian Hösle. Palladion is Germany's leading accelerator for defense and dual-use innovations, which opened on January 16, 2025 as part of the NATO Defense Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) program. This program was established by NATO to develop dual-use technologies that address security and defense challenges. Palladion supports start-ups with expert advice as well as testing and development opportunities to promote innovative solutions.

Currently, Palladion's first cohort consists of five start-ups: Aedil, Blue Armada Robotics, Delta Orbit, Delta Vision and Dolprop, which come from Germany, Poland, Norway and Sweden. These companies gain access to a broad network as well as resources and expertise that are crucial for the development of their technologies. Ministerial Director Meyer-Höper expressed his confidence that Palladion will facilitate dialogue between developers and relevant stakeholders to successfully integrate innovative solutions into the defense and security sector.

Focus on resilience and innovation

During his lecture, General Breuer discussed the Bundeswehr's security policy challenges and current geopolitical developments. He particularly emphasized the importance of resilience and innovation in a rapidly changing global environment. The discussions with students and employees of the university enabled an active exchange and laid the foundation for future collaborations.

General Breuer's visit to UniBw M and the presentation of the Palladion Defense Accelerator illustrate the growing importance of research and innovation in Germany's security and defense architecture. By supporting start-ups and new technologies, the Bundeswehr is intended to strengthen its capabilities and ensure technological advantage in the NATO context, while at the same time pursuing the goals of DIANA.
