Dr. Markus S. Rieder was appointed honorary professor at the University of Passau. This award was presented at the end of January by the university president Prof. Dr. Ulrich Bartosch presented. Rieder is a partner in the Munich office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and co-chair of the Transnational Litigation practice group. His academic career began in 1996 with an LL.M. at the University of Michigan, followed by German law studies, which he completed in 2003 with a doctorate at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich.

Rieder has been admitted to the New York State Bar since 1998 and has been admitted to the German bar since 1999. Since 2011 he has been teaching at the Chair of German and European Private Law and Legal Theory at the University of Passau. In the winter semester 2024/25 he will work together with Dr. Daniel Holzmann will design a course on “dispute avoidance and out-of-court dispute resolution”. In addition, he is introducing a new course on corporate litigation, which combines theory and practice in corporate and society-related dispute resolution.

Achievements and awards

Rieder is a member of several practice groups, including class actions, securities litigation and international arbitration. In 2023/2024 he was named “Lawyer of the Year” for corporate governance and compliance and international arbitration. He previously received this honor in 2021 for arbitration and mediation and in 2020 and 2021 for corporate governance and compliance.

Rieder was also included in the current “Lawdragon Global Litigation 500” ranking. This is a list recognizing the top 500 litigators worldwide in transnational disputes and arbitration. Recognition in this list underlines his outstanding position in the international legal community. According to the information from Lawdragon lists numerous leading international arbitration and disputes lawyers, including Steve Abraham of Baker McKenzie in London, Melis Acuner of Quinn Emanuel and John Adam of Squire Patton Boggs in Paris.

These appointments and awards demonstrate Rieder's significant role in the field of law and his ability to excel in both practice and academic teaching. His combination of extensive experience in international practice and academic knowledge makes him an important figure in the German and international legal system.

He will continue to play a central role in the training and development of future lawyers at the University of Passau and thus actively contribute to promoting interdisciplinary exchange and teaching methods.
