Discover the diversity: BioBlitz in Botanical Gardens 2025!
The exciting hands-on activity “BioBlitz” to explore biodiversity in botanical gardens will take place from June 14th to 22nd, 2025. These events are part of the “Botanic Gardens Week 2025”, in which a total of 35 gardens in German-speaking countries work together to use and document biological diversity. Dr. Mark Benecke, a renowned criminal biologist, takes over as patron and brings both scientific expertise and public engagement to promote interest in nature. fau.de reports that this is an invitation to everyone who enjoys nature and photography.
Participants can use the free app iNaturalist to explore and document a variety of living things, from plants and animals to fungi and lichens. The app is available in both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. To participate, users must register for free and record their observations in the app during their visit to the botanical garden. After uploading this data, location sharing can be disabled at any time, helping to protect privacy. verband-botanischer-gaerten.de explains that every observation counts and makes a significant contribution to recording biodiversity in the gardens.
Competitions and awards
As part of the BioBlitz, various competitions are offered to honor the best participants. The categories include the most active observer, the greatest photo and the most diverse observations per garden. These are selected by a jury consisting of association representatives. The events also include tours, workshops, lectures and identification courses that will enrich the experience in the Botanical Gardens. botanischergarten.hhu.de highlights that all collected observations will be brought together in a larger umbrella project, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of biodiversity.
The BioBlitz initiative is not only an opportunity for documentation, but also a call to raise awareness of the local flora and fauna. Botanical gardens provide valuable habitats for many species and are therefore a central part of this exploration. Botanical Gardens Week 2025 promises to be an exciting event for nature lovers and environmentalists.
