First National Veterans Day: Memories and Honors in Focus!
The first national Veterans Day took place in Germany on June 15, 2025, an event that focused on the importance and achievements of veterans for peace, freedom and democracy. To celebrate the occasion, the university library of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich (UniBw M) opened a photo exhibition entitled “Operational Thoughts”.
This exhibition, which opened on June 12, 2025, shows photographs by Sergeant Major Mathias P. that were taken during his Bundeswehr deployment in Mali. At the opening, Lieutenant Colonel Stefan Mühlich shared personal operational experiences that illuminate the emotional depth and challenges of military service. Sergeant Major Mathias P. explained that he took more than 900 photos during his third deployment in 2021, around 50 of which can be seen in the current exhibition.

The photo exhibition presents not only the impressive images, but also additional materials such as diary entries, specialist literature and the photographer's personal items. The photographs show camps, shelters and the landscape in Mali, the challenges the soldiers faced, such as sandstorms, and the camaraderie among each other. The exhibition is accessible in the foyer of Building 35 during the summer months.
In addition to the celebrations at UniBw M, numerous events took place across Germany on Saturday, June 15, 2025. Veterans Day in Augustdorf included, among other things, a field service, greetings, networking, music and culinary offerings. In Euskirchen, another photo exhibition entitled “Faces of Life” was opened in the Düsseldorf state parliament on June 17, 2025, in the presence of the state parliament president Kupper and the patron general.
A variety of events for Veterans Day
The Veterans Day celebrations also included a variety of events, including a “March of Appreciation” in Duisburg, a panel discussion on the topic of “Democracy and its values - its threat - their defense” in Borgentreich on June 13, 2025 and the handing out of veteran badges in Lippstadt on June 22, 2025. In Bad Westernkotten, a musical and entertaining supporting program was offered at the promenade festival.
Veterans Day not only offers an opportunity to honor the achievements of former soldiers, but also a platform for exchange and networking in society. On June 14, 2025, events took place in Düsseldorf that offered space for appreciation and exchange, while on June 11, 2025, the Invictus Germany Awards were presented in Düsseldorf to honor people who were injured in action or fell ill on duty, as reported bundeswehr.de.
Overall, Veterans Day in Germany is not only a symbol of recognition, but also a sign of respectful treatment of history and the challenges that soldiers face in their service.
