Inclusion in focus: New course for educational equity starts!

The Catholic University (KU) and the University of Passau have developed a remarkable course dedicated to inclusion in education. This course is part of a joint project that includes a total of four courses from the Chair of Social and Health Education. The importance of supervision for the quality of virtual courses is particularly emphasized by Jean-Pierre Harder, a research assistant at the chair. He emphasizes that communication with students is crucial, which is confirmed by the course's nomination for an award. Dr. Tamara Rachbauer from the University of Passau, on the other hand, is responsible for comprehensive student support for the course.

As part of this support concept, three exchange forums were set up that offer participants the opportunity to receive announcements and ask questions. Lecturers moderate these forums and ensure timely, constructive feedback. In addition, hybrid reflection sessions are regularly offered in which participants are prepared for performance assessments. The course covers the development of an inclusive education system and shows how inclusion can be implemented in educational institutions. This learning is supported by the vhb offering, which enables students to flexibly take additional courses and have them recognized. Those interested without student status can also take part and acquire certificates via the OPEN-vhb offer.

Importance of inclusion

Inclusion aims to allow people to participate equally in social life beyond their individual characteristics. This philosophy is inextricably linked to the concept of participation. Loud vhb Inclusion is viewed as a process that begins in the family and continues through educational institutions into working life. The free OPEN vhb online introductory course deals with the legal, educational and socio-political aspects of inclusion. The application of these principles in everyday life is also discussed.

Not only does the concept represent a comprehensive view of diversity, but, unlike integration, which is the adaptation to existing systems, inclusion shows the need to include all people. These developments have become more relevant since the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Online courses cover all age groups and require specially trained professionals in pedagogy. This promotes awareness of the complexity of inclusion.

Digital accessibility in higher education

Another important aspect is digital accessibility. The Federal Office for Accessibility was founded in 2016 to support authorities and administrations in implementing accessibility. A dossier from the University Forum on Digitalization addresses inclusion and educational equity in digital higher education. Reference is also made to projects such as HessenHub, which develop innovative concepts for digital teaching and support teachers.

Several initiatives are currently underway, including the DACHS project at Bielefeld University, which creates a barrier-free platform for teachers and students with disabilities. Further efforts to improve digital accessibility at German universities were undertaken by the innovation forum InnoBar, which provides qualification opportunities for teachers. The TU Dresden and numerous other institutions offer materials and training to promote digital accessibility in higher education.

The combination of inclusion and digital education represents a promising development, driven by the use of digital media and active engagement in higher education. Research work, such as the issue on inclusion published in the journal Research & Teaching, also shows the increasing interest and relevance of these topics.
