International cooperation: UniBw Munich and Plymouth start joint masters!

The University of the Bundeswehr Munich (UniBw M) is taking a significant step towards international education and partnership. On August 19, 2025, a collaboration with the University of Plymouth was announced. This partnership aims to expand UniBw M's academic network beyond Europe and strengthen collaboration with the United Kingdom. The collaboration will focus in particular on the master's degree program “Applied Strategy and International Security”.

The University of Plymouth program, which has the academic leadership, is complemented by two special modules from UniBw M. The curriculum is designed to cover deep topics in global security and defense policy. This includes:

  • Krieg, Strategie und Recht
  • Terrorismusbekämpfung
  • Sicherheit und Resilienz
  • Transnationale und internationale Konflikte
  • Maritime und Weltraumstrategie

Hybrid learning format for students

An outstanding feature of the cooperation is the hybrid learning format. Students have the opportunity to either participate interactively online or attend face-to-face events either in Plymouth or Munich. This flexibility is aimed at a broad target group, particularly those who want to return to education or advance their professional development.

The master's program prepares graduates for demanding roles in defense and security, not only in the UK and NATO countries, but also internationally. A hybrid research workshop that takes place once a year and access to a certified course in cybersecurity and terrorism complete the offering.

Location of the cooperation

The University of Plymouth, distinguished by its global academic partnerships, aims to improve access to higher education. Its aim is to increase the number of partner institutions and develop new locations in the UK and abroad. These international university collaborations are an important part of the education strategy. They offer students the opportunity to earn degrees both on-site and through distance learning courses.

The collaboration between UniBw M and the University of Plymouth will start in September 2025 and applications are still possible. Students receive a degree from the University of Plymouth and benefit from a supportive learning environment as well as active membership in the University of Plymouth Student Council.

The increasing international orientation of German universities, as well as the commitment of UniBw M, shows how important transnational education is for internationalization strategies. The code for German university projects abroad, passed in 2013, sets the minimum qualitative and ethical requirements. Universities that join this code position themselves as quality-conscious and interculturally sensitive partners in global educational competition.
