AI is conquering the campus: New insights into research and teaching!

On June 6, 2025, the University of the Bundeswehr Munich (UniBw M) will show how artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly finding its way into higher education. In the current issue of the university magazine inside.unibw The magazine highlights various aspects of AI application, particularly in the areas of image processing, research and teaching. Prof. Sonja Kretzschmar from UniBw M emphasizes the urgency of critically questioning visual content in order to avoid misinformation and distorted representations.

At UniBw M, intensive research into AI has been carried out for decades in over 20 professorships and junior groups in the Faculty of Computer Science. The CODE research institute has recognized AI as one of the three central focuses and is thus promoting the scientific basis for future developments. Prof. Karl-Heinz Renner, Vice President for Teaching, highlights the positive aspects of AI in teaching. According to him, AI plays a crucial role in increasing productivity and personalizing learning content.

Use of AI in higher education

Despite the advantages, Renner warns against over-reliance on generative AI. The potential loss of fundamental skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving skills could have a negative long-term impact on students.

The federal government supports the integration of AI into higher education through the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Since the end of 2021, the federal-state initiative “Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education” has been funding projects that deal with the development of study programs, intelligent assistance systems and AI-based learning and examination systems. An example of this is the AI Action Plan, which was published on November 7, 2023 and underlines the relevance of AI for science and society, as well the education server reported.

In addition, projects such as the KI Campus offer a digital learning platform that provides online courses and materials. The Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) also promote AI training and its integration into existing education systems. The debate about AI-supported tools, such as the chatbot ChatGPT, which has been discussed in the university context since the end of 2022, shows the challenges and opportunities associated with the use of such technologies.
