Cancer expert Klinkhammer-Schalke wins German Cancer Prize 2025!

On April 8, 2025, Prof. Dr. Monika Klinkhammer-Schalke, director of the Regensburg Tumor Center, was awarded the prestigious German Cancer Prize 2025. This is reported by the Regensburg university media and emphasize that this prize is awarded by the German Cancer Society and the German Cancer Foundation and is one of the most important awards in oncology.

Klinkhammer-Schalke is one of four scientists who were honored this year. In addition to her, the award winners also include Prof. Melanie Börries from the University Hospital of Freiburg, Prof. Walter Paul Weber from the University Hospital of Basel and Prof. Matthias Fischer from the University Hospital of Cologne. The German Cancer Prize is awarded annually in the categories “Translational Research”, “Clinical Research”, “Experimental Research” and “Healthcare Research”.

Merits in health services research

Klinkhammer-Schalke was honored in the “Health Care Research” category for its outstanding achievements in oncological quality assurance. She has launched comprehensive networks to improve oncological care and care-related research. Her role as chairwoman of the German Network for Healthcare Research e. V. (DNVF) and the Association of German Tumor Centers e.V. (ADT) emphasizes their importance in the field of health care.

The co-initiator of the National Cancer Plan made a significant contribution to the systematic collection and analysis of care data. Scientists and experts emphasize the essential role of their work in the quality and continuous development of medical care for cancer patients. A concrete example of their research is the WIZEN study, which demonstrates the importance of certified cancer centers for patient survival.

The role of health services research

Health care research is an interdisciplinary research field that focuses on the perspective of patients and the entire health care context. It examines the care structures and processes within health care and describes the results at the level of everyday care. This is particularly important for the further development of care for cancer patients. Certified cancer centers, such as the Tumor Center run by Klinkhammer-Schalke, offer the necessary infrastructure for this type of research.

The existing uniform documentation standards, including survey forms, quality indicators and clinical cancer registries, create a basis for well-founded research into appropriate interventions. These documentation standards make it possible to regularly publish key figures in annual reports, which are available in both German and English. In addition, the certification areas initiate research projects in collaboration with university and non-university partners. Information on ongoing projects is provided and published in specialist journals, which contributes to the transparency and further development of health services research.

The German Cancer Prize has been awarded annually since 1986 and is endowed with 7,500 euros per category. This award highlights the importance and commitment of scientists in the fight against cancer and contributes to the advancement of research and clinical practice.
