Literary highlight: Alina Bronsky starts poetry professorship in Bamberg!

On April 30, 2025, the Bamberg Poetics Professorship was updated, and the University of Bamberg is pleased to announce Alina Bronsky as this year's Poetics Professor. Bronsky, who was born in Sverdlovsk in 1978 and has lived in Germany since the 1990s, will give her opening reading on May 7, 2025 at 7 p.m. at the ETA Hoffmann Theater in Bamberg.

Her new novel “Pi mal Thumb”, published in 2024, plays a central role in Bronsky’s program. The book deals with the special friendship between 16-year-old Oscar and 53-year-old Moni, who is aiming to study math, and has already been named “Independent Bookstores’ Favorite Book of 2024”. The reading will not only be about the presentation of the work, but also a conversation with Professor Andrea Bartl, who organizes the poetry professorship.

Events as part of the poetry professorship

The poetry professorship includes a series of events that are free of charge and open to anyone interested. In addition to the opening reading on May 7th, further poetry lectures are also planned: These will take place on May 8th at 2 p.m. and on June 25th and July 24th at 6 p.m. in lecture hall U2/00.25 at the University of Bamberg. Bronsky will be accompanied musically by students from the Bamberg Municipal Music School, which will further enrich the event.

The research colloquium, which will take place from July 23 to 25, 2025, offers a special opportunity. In cooperation with the International Artists' House Villa Concordia, this part of the poetry professorship will also be influenced by Bronsky's work.

Additional events and readings

An additional date is the reading by Olivia Kuderewski and Julius Hendricks, which will take place on May 9, 2025 at 7 p.m. at the University of Bamberg. Kuderewski, who will present her novel “Haha Heartbreak” (2022), studied literature in Augsburg and Seville and literary writing in Hildesheim. This reading takes place as part of a writing workshop at the Bavarian Academy of Writing.

The poetry professorship in Bamberg is part of a larger, trendy and traditional format that is practiced at several universities. According to the Ludwig Maximilians University, the poetry lecture provides insights into writing and the challenges in the literary world. What is particularly noteworthy is that the poetry lectures at the LMU Munich were reactivated in 2024 in order to take up author-related topics again.

Bamberg informed across the entire event schedule, during further details on the opening reading can be found on the city platforms. The extensive program of the Bamberg Poetry Professorship is enriched by the numerous commitment and active participation of visitors.
