Mathematics showdown in Passau: 72 school teams fight for victory!

On March 14, 2025, the University of Passau will be the venue for an important international mathematics competition: the Náboj. This year a total of 72 school teams are taking part in the competition. These are made up of 49 junior teams and 23 senior teams, which underlines the diversity and ambition of the participating students. In total, over 1,000 teams in 13 countries have registered for the Náboj competition. This information was provided by the University of Passau provided.

The event is a highlight in the competitive landscape of mathematics, which has become increasingly diversified in recent years. Participants can look forward to 120 minutes of challenging tasks. At the start of the event, each team is given six tasks, arranged in increasing difficulty. After solving one problem, a new one is provided, with the solutions usually consisting of numerical values. The team that presents the most correctly solved tasks wins the competition. This process encourages students' creativity and logical thinking, as shown in the guidelines of Naboj 2023 emerges.

Diverse venues and organization

The Náboj competition has a long tradition dating back to 1998, when the first events took place in Bratislava. It has since expanded to other cities in Europe, including Košice, Prague and Opava. In Germany, the competition is held not only in Passau, but also in Leipzig, Hamburg and, for the first time, in Würzburg. This shows the growing interest and spread of competition at the national level.

The organization of the competition in Passau is led by Dr. Erich Fuchs is responsible. Local rankings are created at each venue, allowing teams to directly compare their performances. In addition to local rankings, national and international rankings are also published, allowing students to track their progress compared to other teams. What is particularly noteworthy is that certificates and prizes are awarded to the best teams in each competition, the form of which depends on their placement.

Interactive and exciting mathematics

The tasks of the Náboj competition not only promote mathematical skills, but also require creative thinking. They differ significantly from typical school exercises, which makes the competition special. Teams compete in two categories: juniors and seniors. In the junior category, no students from the last or second to last class are allowed to take part, while in the senior category, teams can consist of any students from the same school. Such a division allows for fair competition among participants, regardless of their level of experience with mathematics competitions.

In the mathematics landscape, competitions like Náboj are an important element in promoting interest in mathematics and other MINT subjects. In addition to the Náboj, there are numerous other formats such as the Mathematics Olympiad or the Kangaroo of Mathematics, which encourage students to develop and expand their mathematical skills, such as German Mathematicians Association notes.

Media representatives will have the opportunity to follow the event, where they will be welcomed in the university's WIWI building from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Anyone interested can register at kommunikation@uni-passau.de.
