Lower Bavaria Medical Campus: Future of health education in Passau!
On April 4, 2025, the Presidium of the Bavarian State Parliament, led by State Parliament President Ilse Aigner, visited Lower Bavaria to find out about the Lower Bavaria Medical Campus (MCN) in Passau. This initiative aims to improve medical education in the region and strengthen local medical care. The visit included both the Passau Clinic and the University of Passau, where central aspects of the project were discussed.
A central topic of the visit was the project history and the organizational and contractual structure of the MCN. The newly founded Institute for Health Sciences was also presented. Prof. Dr. Ulrich Bartosch, President of the University of Passau, emphasized that the visit was an honor and a pleasure and underlined the university's scientific strength.
Digital medical education and innovative teaching methods
Another focus was the Center for Digital Medical Education (ZeDiMA), which acts as a central hub for digital teaching within the MCN. A demonstration featured a multimedia lecture hall that demonstrated innovative forms of teaching such as virtual anatomy. These modern teaching methods are intended to help students better prepare for the challenges of medical practice.
The Lower Bavaria Medical Campus is in close connection with the University of Regensburg, from which the “Medicine Lower Bavaria” degree program is derived. The preclinical part of the course is completed at the University of Regensburg, while the clinical semesters are carried out at the MCN locations in Deggendorf/Mainkofen, Landshut, Passau and Straubing. The course of the course has a clear focus on practical training on site.
First cohort and introductory event
A significant development within the MCN was the welcoming event for the first cohort of 110 students, which took place on October 14, 2024 at the University of Regensburg. Guests from science, politics and the MCN's partner institutions were present at the event. The President of the University of Regensburg, Prof. Dr. Udo Hebel, opened the event and emphasized the goal of introducing the new students and the partner institutions.
Special greetings were given by important personalities such as Bavaria's Minister of Science Markus Blume and Bernd Sibler, District Administrator Deggendorf. The event also offered the new students the opportunity to exchange ideas directly with representatives of the MCN partners and to be musically accompanied by the University Jazz Combo.
The comprehensive presentation of the projects and academic offerings shows how important medical education in Lower Bavaria is in order to train and promote future healthcare professionals. The medical campus offers promising prospects for the region and the students who want to receive a sound education there.
