MINT workshop in Passau: Promote and network regional talent!
The MINT-INDIGO workshop took place in Passau on July 29, 2025, organized by Prof. Forster-Heinlein and the INDIGO network. Over 20 MINT players from Eastern Bavaria took part in this important networking meeting. The aim of the workshop was to make regional MINT activities visible, promote the exchange of best practices and create opportunities for cooperation. The initiative for the workshop arose within the international engineering association IEEE, which focuses on exchanges to support school students.
The workshop was led by Prof. Dr. Jan H. Schumann, Vice President of the University of Passau, opened the event. He emphasized the role of MINT funding for society and the economy, a topic that Prof. Dr. Gordon Fraser, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, took up the issue. Concrete examples of successful MINT initiatives were presented, including the “Young University” and the MINT Roadshow, presented by Andrea Stelzl and other experts.
Focus on MINT offers in Eastern Bavaria
Angelika Hable and Florian Obermüller reported on three MINT regions: Lower Bavaria, InnRaum3 and Innviertel+. These regions show how diverse MINT funding measures can be designed. Dr. Stefanie Winkler and Dr. Erich Fuchs focused on early MINT promotion in primary schools and lower grades.
The topic of transition to university was particularly important, which was discussed by Prof. Dr. Nada Sissouno, Alina Hühne and Dr. Simone Purpose was discussed. The importance of practical workshops for young people and support for teachers were also at the center of the discussion. Verena Gubisch and Dr. Christian Müller emphasized how important these workshops are for integrating MINT topics into lessons.
Interested in future collaborations
The INDIGO network, which consists of six East Bavarian universities, aims to strengthen the region as an attractive science location. A keen interest in information about platforms and cooperation opportunities was expressed among the participants. Many expressed the desire for a regular MINT exchange in Eastern Bavaria, and Verena Gubisch from BayernLabs offered to host the next networking meeting in Vilshofen next year.
The workshop ended with a visit to the Passau Mathematics Museum, which celebrated its new location. The question of MINT funding is not only important for the Eastern Bavaria region. In the context of global challenges such as the energy transition and digital transformation, it is clear that MINT skills are essential for social participation and economic success. The Education-research.digital points out that MINT education must be promoted from daycare to further education.
To support this, the INDIGO network initiated the partner advisory board, which works with institutions from the trades, business, science and administration. The newest member is the Association of Electrical Engineering (VDE) Bavaria, as in indigo-netzwerk.de reported. In addition, the largest upcoming event, TRIOKON 2025, is scheduled for September 25th at the University of Passau to hold discussions about security and resilience.
