Munich is building a defense hub: TUM Venture Labs are setting new standards!

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Hensoldt have launched a strategic partnership to advance the field of security and defense technologies. In a joint initiative, the TUM Venture Lab Aerospace is to be strengthened through the expertise of Hensoldt as a core partner. This collaboration aims to provide new impetus for technology-focused spin-offs focused on the defense sector, such as tum.de reported.

With a total of twelve venture labs, TUM promotes technology-oriented spin-offs and supports founders in turning promising research results into marketable products. Hensoldt, based in Taufkirchen near Munich, brings valuable industrial knowledge that will help the founders understand and address the specific needs of the defense market. Hensoldt thus ensures that the start-ups are optimally prepared for developments in the defense industry, explains Dr. Florian Dötzer, head of the TUM Venture Lab Aerospace.

Changing security landscape

The need to respond appropriately to the changing global security situation is of central importance to TUM President Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann. The Ukraine conflict and other geopolitical tensions have drastically changed security requirements. This leads to an increase in defense spending in EU member states, which increased by over 30% between 2021 and 2024. The EU is expected to spend a total of around 326 billion euros, equivalent to 1.9% of GDP, on defense, according to a report by trendingtopics.eu is highlighted.

The defense industry is confronted with a variety of new security policy challenges. Innovative start-ups are crucial to improving the military response to cyberattacks and hybrid threats. The partnership between TUM and Hensoldt is positioned not just as a single step, but as part of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen innovative strength in Europe.

Strategic partnership and its goals

The focus of the TUM Venture Lab “Aerospace & Defense” is on establishing a European defense technology hub that helps founders and companies strengthen the connection between science and industry. Christian Schmidt, Chief Strategy Officer at Hensoldt, emphasizes the importance of a dynamic network of research institutions that offers start-ups insights into industry-specific requirements and processes. Regular meetings in committees and working groups are intended to promote the exchange of ideas and synergies so that new perspectives and solutions can emerge for the current challenges of the defense industry.

Dr. Philipp Gerbert, CEO of TUM Venture Labs, emphasizes that the Venture Labs play a central role in the innovation process for defense-relevant technologies. These innovation centers provide support to aspiring entrepreneurs who want to implement promising research and ideas, helping to not only address the challenges of the present but also create new technologies for the future.
