Munich celebrates AI innovation: TUM prize for groundbreaking start-ups!

The start-up SUMM AI recently won the renowned TUM Presidential Entrepreneurship Award receive. This award is given to innovative business ideas that are based on solid research results, have high growth potential and have initial success in financing. The prize, worth 10,000 euros, was awarded as part of the TUM Entrepreneurship Day, where numerous players in the Munich innovation ecosystem exchanged ideas.

The TUM Entrepreneurship Day, an important event for the exchange about the AI research landscape and European sovereignty in space, provided the framework for the awarding of the prize. In the finals of the event, SUMM AI competed with other innovative projects such as KEWAZO, which develops robots for the construction industry, and Phlair, a carbon capture technology. Over 1,800 visitors came to get to know more than 50 start-ups and their innovative approaches.

Innovations in plain language

The co-founder of SUMM AI, Flora Geske, reported on the company's progress in the development of plain language. The cooperation with Apotheker Umschau, Germany's largest health magazine, to publish understandable medical texts is particularly impressive. SUMM AI's AI tool, which can now translate into easy French and easy English in addition to German, has already been used for the French government.

A highlight of the technology is the significant time savings in the editing process, which improves the quality of the translations. To date, over 80,000 texts have been translated into plain language by well-known customers such as Deutsche Bahn, Telekom and Sparkasse. This is part of the company's ongoing development, which also aims to integrate with content management systems such as WordPress and Typo3.

Support and challenges in the startup ecosystem

SUMM AI has completed a successful seven-figure financing round, supported by venture stars, family offices and business angels. The company benefits from the support of the Munich ecosystem, which is characterized by institutions such as UnternehmerTUM, Media Lab Bayern and Werk1. Flora Geske, on the other hand, emphasizes the challenges that come with building a growing team and maintaining the corporate culture.

A central goal of SUMM AI is to provide comprehensive information in plain language in all German municipalities. This is done in accordance with the Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG), which comes into force in 2025 and requires companies to provide barrier-free information.

The role of the European Commission in AI development

In the context of these advances in AI technology, the European Commission strives to build a strong and coherent artificial intelligence ecosystem in Europe. This initiative aims to establish Europe as a leading location for AI innovation and is supported by several programs including European Digital Innovation Centers (EDIH) and Test and Experimental Facilities (TEF).

The European Strategy aims to connect different sectors, develop talent and provide training activities to improve AI-related skills. In an increasingly competitive market, it is crucial that companies like SUMM AI not only offer innovative solutions, but also benefit from a strong support system.
