New course of study at the University of Würzburg: Psychology for school psychologists!

From the winter semester 2025/2026, a new course of study entitled “Psychology with a focus on school psychology” will be offered at the University of Würzburg. This innovative course of study is aimed at newly enrolled teacher training students and combines psychological content with pedagogical and didactic elements of teacher training. The main goal is to impart in-depth knowledge of psychological diagnostics, counseling and intervention specifically for the school context. This is particularly important given the great need for school psychologists, especially in Lower Franconia. Prospective students can register via the university's online portal until October 10, 2025, and lectures will begin on October 13, 2025. JMU President Paul Pauli and Science Minister Markus Blume welcome the establishment of the degree program, while Education Minister Anna Stolz underlines the importance of this offer for the region.

The course qualifies its graduates to work as school psychologists in school counseling. In addition, he prepares students to teach the subject of “psychology” at secondary schools. These are key points that highlight the attractiveness and relevance of the new course of study. Another aspect worth highlighting is the extensive practical training, which enables students to gain valuable experience in a school setting. The curriculum also allows the course of study to be combined with the subjects of Latin, English and mathematics for high school teaching.

Course content and structure

The structure of the course is diverse and characterized by a close connection between theory and practice. According to information from psychology.uni-wuerzburg.de, each module usually includes two courses (4 SWS). Students choose between lectures and seminars, although there are exceptions for the “DiffDia” module, which is offered virtually.

In addition, high school teacher training students cannot acquire any ECTS points in the outdoor area unless they take modules from subject didactics. For participants in primary and secondary school education, the “Psychological Measures and Methods” module offers courses that are thematically tailored to the needs of these types of schools. Here students can acquire ECTS points that relate to the specific teacher training regulations.
