New GeoSustainability” degree program at FAU: Opportunities for the future!

In the winter semester of 2025/26, the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) will expand its range of courses and offer over 275 courses. Among the new programs, the bachelor's degree program “GeoSustainability: Earth System, Resources, Biodiversity” stands out, which deals intensively with the challenges of sustainability within our Earth system. This includes the topics of resources, climate and biodiversity, such as FAU reported.

The bachelor’s degree program “GeoSustainability” extends over six semesters. The first two semesters focus on social and geoscientific challenges. In the following semesters, students gain practical experience in advanced modules and internships before writing their own research papers in the final section. Career prospects lie in specialist environmental authorities, industrial companies and museums.

New master's programs and offerings

In addition to the new bachelor's program, several master's degree programs will also be introduced. In the future, the master's degree in “Industrial Engineering” can also be taken in a part-time format, which offers flexibility for working people. This qualification opens up prospects for graduates in business, administration and politics, where they can choose between engineering and economics specialist areas. FAU emphasizes that the course can now be completed in a period of eight semesters.

Another newly introduced master's degree program is “Learning Design – Digital Transformation in Education”. This is aimed at graduates with a background in educational science and offers modules on media didactics, educational technology and media ethics. This course also runs over eight semesters and prepares students for the requirements of adult education and lifelong learning.

In addition, the “WiPäd TRIAL” course of study in the bachelor’s program in “Economics” is being expanded. This new field of study combines theory with practical training phases in schools, whereby students can be paid for their practical work from the first semester onwards.

Career-oriented study programs

Particular attention is paid to the new master's degree program in “Dental Preservation,” which is designed specifically for dentists. The content includes periodontics, endodontics and pediatric dentistry, supplemented by clinical case discussions and patient treatments. The master's thesis is written in the fifth semester.

FAU attaches great importance to good support through advisory services. The Central Student Advisory Service (ZSB) offers assistance in choosing a course of study. Anyone interested can contact the ZSB by phone at 09131/85-23333 or by email at zsb@fau.de.

Students who are interested in the “GeoSustainability” bachelor’s program can benefit from modern, research-oriented courses. The course combines scientific fundamentals of natural sciences and geosciences with practical training in laboratories and through excursions, such as GeoSustainability described in detail. A mobility phase that enables studying abroad promotes the students' international perspective.

In the further discussion about sustainability, the multidisciplinary character is increasingly emphasized. An analysis shows that studies often take place within the framework of “Sustainability + X”, where “X” can represent specific theoretical perspectives, such as economics or engineering. This diversity is clearly highlighted in the new degree programs at FAU and offers numerous professional starting points in promising areas of sustainable development, such as StudyCheck notes.
