New online tool for dementia prevention: Protect your memory!

On March 7, 2025, the “digiDEM Bayern Prevention Coach®” was introduced by the Digital Dementia Register Bavaria (digiDEM Bayern). The aim of this initiative is to reduce the personal risk of dementia. The new online service provides scientifically based information on dementia risk factors and useful tips for dementia prevention. The introduction is supported by the Bavarian State Ministry for Health, Care and Prevention (StMGP) and is based at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU). fau.de reports.

A free offer from the prevention coach is a knowledge quiz on the risks of dementia. This coach covers a total of 14 risk factors that are associated with approximately 45% of all dementia, according to the Lancet Commission on dementia prevention, intervention, and care, revised in July 2024. Factors include low education levels, hearing loss, high blood pressure, smoking and diabetes mellitus.

Holistic approach to prevention

The risk factors are divided into three life phases: early, middle and late. Practical tips to reduce these risks are provided. An example is that high LDL cholesterol levels can reduce the risk of dementia by up to 7% through a healthy diet. The knowledge quiz encourages participants to think more intensively about the individual risk factors. With three questions about each risk factor, users' health literacy is also strengthened.

The “DigiDEM Bavaria” project, which also aims to improve the living conditions of people with dementia and their relatives, has been running since 2019 and will continue until 2023. This is done by alzheimer-suedostbayern.de supports those who provide information on the involvement of those affected and their caring relatives. Data donations are intended to uncover regional supply gaps in order to sustainably improve the supply situation.

Education for everyone involved

A central concern of the project is to pass on information to politicians about the needs and progression of the disease of those affected. This could create a better basis for health care decisions.

In addition, a training series from the Alzheimer Society Southeast Bavaria will be held in 2025. V. offered to further improve the care and support of people with dementia.
