New project to improve teaching: 7 million euros for Bamberg!
On October 1, 2025, the project “Shaping Bamberg Cultures of Teaching Together” (BaKuLe) started at the Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg. This initiative is funded by the Innovation in University Teaching Foundation with up to 7 million euros until 2031, which represents the largest funding amount for improving teaching at the university. The first funding phase runs until 2029 and provides up to 5.15 million euros. The final decision on the full amount will be made after an interim evaluation.
The main aim of the project is to reshape the teaching culture through meaningful and participatory processes. All university members, including students, lecturers, employees in the science-supporting area and the university management, should be actively involved in this process. Over 50 participants have already jointly identified ten work packages to improve teaching, which are now being implemented.
Initiatives to improve teaching quality
Work is also underway to develop lecture rooms into informal learning spaces. The focus is also on modern exam formats that take artificial intelligence into account and equalize the exam phases. A digital study planning assistant is being further developed to provide individual support to students.
BaKuLe follows on from the previous project “Developing Digital Cultures of Teaching” (DiKuLe), whose funding expires at the end of 2025. In DiKuLe, around 5.3 million euros have flowed into digital teaching innovations since 2021. Findings from DiKuLe are integrated into BaKuLe to ensure progress in digital teaching. The continuous examination of new teaching methods is an essential aspect of both projects.
Symposium on University Development
The results of the workshops and other insights from the symposium will be published both in the University of Bamberg's research information system and in anthologies at the turn of the year 2025/2026. The keynote speeches by professors such as Frank Ziegele and Christian Spannagel addressed the future of university development and the use of modern teaching methods.
A look at the awards from the symposium shows the high value placed on innovative strength at the university: Best Video Awards were presented for various educational projects that are pioneers in the use of digital technologies in teaching.
