Relevance of school psychology

Mental health, enjoyment of learning and educational success are closely related. In this context, school psychology plays a key role in the complex school landscape by supporting students, parents, teachers and school management. How psychologenakademie.de explains, school psychology promotes personality development as well as learning and performance abilities and makes a significant contribution to the mental health of students.

The development of school psychology in Germany goes back to the 1920s. It has changed from a test diagnosis to a comprehensive advice and support system. Historical events, such as the Erfurt shooting in 2002, led to a rethink in politics and the public. Today, crisis prevention and intervention are central areas of responsibility in school psychology.

The contribution to mental health

The school plays a central role in promoting mental health and preventing psychological problems. As the Hessian Ministry of Culture emphasizes, it is crucial to develop schools into places where mental illnesses are openly discussed and stigmatization is reduced. This requires close collaboration between school psychologists and other professions to identify individual risk factors and provide appropriate support.

The demand for school psychologists is increasing and there are good employment prospects, but there are bottlenecks in supply in some regions nationwide. The use of digital consulting formats and the formation of multi-professional teams are seen as important topics in the future. School psychologists are required to continually reflect on their methods and develop innovative concepts for crisis intervention.
