New Center for Digital Medicine launched in Munich: the future of health!
Construction of the new Center for Digital Medicine and Health (ZDMG) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) began with the groundbreaking ceremony on June 27, 2025. The Bavarian Minister of Science Markus Blume was present at the ceremonial opening. The center will be built on the campus of the TUM Klinikum Rechts der Isar in the Haidhausen district of Munich.
The aim of the ZDMG is to promote interdisciplinary research in the areas of medical research, artificial intelligence (AI) and data science. The center is intended to use innovative approaches to accelerate the identification of diseases and enable individual therapies. Particular attention is paid to the secure handling of health data in order to protect patient privacy. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027.
Research focus and capacities
The ZDMG will offer a total usable area of around 2,050 square meters and create space for around 140 employees. In addition to offices, the building will contain a data observatory and a powerful computer cluster, essential for developing new AI and data science methods. This Data Observatory will be the largest of its kind in Europe and will enable interactive visualization of large data sets, including clinical laboratory results and imaging data.
The Munich Data Science Institute (MDSI) will support the ZDMG as an independent research center. The focus of research is on cancer, cardiovascular and neurological diseases. The development of new data-driven approaches aims to benefit patients. Aspects such as early detection, the diagnosis of diseases and the identification of biomarkers will be of central importance.
Technological innovations and ethical responsibility
The technological developments in the ZDMG will be characterized by the use of artificial intelligence and data science. Given the sensitivity of health data, ethically responsible handling of this information is essential. In this context, the federal government has created a roadmap for digital health innovations. Data protection and data security are of great importance for both the development and application of new technologies.
In order to revolutionize healthcare in Germany, research and healthcare data are being linked together to gain new insights into diseases. The medical informatics initiative is also being supported and aims to promote the networking of German university hospitals to improve patient care. Electronic patient files should be available at all German university hospitals by 2025 and contain all relevant medical data.
The federal government also provides funds to integrate artificial intelligence into healthcare and thus support diagnoses and treatment planning. Advances in biomedical research and innovative analysis tools are critical to optimizing these technologies.
Overall, the ZDMG represents a significant step in the digitalization of healthcare and strives to position Germany as a pioneer for digital healthcare innovations in Europe. The construction of this center is financed by a total of 47.1 million euros from the Free State of Bavaria and the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space.
