Summer Academy: Students discover German and culture in Bavaria!
The Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KU) recently hosted a successful summer school that took place from July 20th to August 9th, 2023. This year, 45 students from 24 countries took part in the program, which aimed to improve the participants' German skills and provide deeper insights into German culture. The diverse offering ranged from regional studies to literary analyzes to practical workshops.
Two courses offered are particularly noteworthy: “Experience Germany and Bavaria” and “Artificial Intelligence in Literature and Film”. The first course focused on regional studies and offered participants the opportunity to work in small groups, conduct interviews in Eichstätt and present their research. The course on artificial intelligence was aimed at advanced learners of German and covered topics relating to the representation of AI in German-language literature and film. The works analyzed included E.T.A. Hoffmann's “The Sandman”, Fritz Lang's “Metropolis” and Elias Hirschl's “Content”.
Cultural experiences and workshops
The summer school also included additional workshops dealing with dramatic play and community music. The students were able to develop their practical skills and discover creative forms of expression. Another part of the program were excursions that took participants to Ingolstadt and Bamberg, where they were able to explore the region's cultural treasures.
The intercultural experiences extended beyond the classroom. In interviews, the students gave insights into their personal impressions, showed their favorite dishes and talked about the challenges that came with learning complicated German words. This platform for expressing experiences strengthened the sense of community and promoted intercultural exchange among the participants.
Similar programs in Germany
The KU is not the only university in Germany that offers summer schools. Other institutions, such as the University of Hannover, also offer programs that aim to integrate international students through language courses and cultural exchange opportunities. These initiatives, such as the 2025 XJTU Industry-Education Integrated Summer Camp, typically last two weeks and include courses in various engineering disciplines as well as cultural activities that visit historic cities.
In Germany, summer schools are an effective way to prepare for a semester abroad or to refresh your language skills. Program details and specific information about courses, including application deadlines and costs, can often be found on each university's website. These programs not only offer students the opportunity to deepen their language skills, but also to apply what they have learned in everyday life.
In order to ensure recognition of the achievements achieved abroad, interested students should clarify the relevant framework conditions with the International Faculty Office of their university. Information about language courses and scholarships is often accessible via platforms such as “Studying Worldwide” or the DAAD websites.
