Strong partnership: UniBw M and DLR secure the future of defense
On March 4, 2025, an expanded cooperation agreement was signed between the University of the Bundeswehr Munich (UniBw M) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). This partnership aims to strengthen security and defense research in Germany and Europe. In this context, Prof. Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla, CEO of DLR, emphasized the essential role of technological and digital sovereignty for the security of the region.
As part of the collaboration, several central research areas have been defined that will be worked on more intensively in the future. These include communication and navigation, the protection of critical infrastructure, earth observation as well as reconnaissance and mission design. An expansion of the range of topics is also planned in order to be able to address the current challenges in the security sector even more closely.
Innovative technologies for society and the Bundeswehr
The President of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, Prof. Eva-Maria Kern, emphasized the need to pool competencies in security and defense research. This initiative is aimed at developing innovative technologies that benefit society as well as authorities and the Bundeswehr.
The successes of this collaboration to date can be seen in various areas, including the future development of critical space infrastructure, mission design and satellite technology. Increasing the interoperability of space-based services is also an important aspect. The close integration with the DLR's Responsive Space Cluster Competence Center is of central importance.
Strengthening the security and defense industry in Bavaria
In addition, the research activities of UniBw M and DLR are integrated into initiatives that aim to strengthen the security and defense industry in Bavaria. This is done by intensifying the exchange of personnel and cooperation on joint projects, which now represent a fundamental part of the strategic partnership.
Given the geopolitical challenges and the associated security requirements, the importance of such collaborations in research and development will soon become even clearer. According to Fraunhofer's position paper on the 2025 federal election, ensuring technological sovereignty is seen as a basic prerequisite for strengthening German security and defense research. The partnership between UniBw M and DLR is therefore an important step in shaping the future safely.
