TUM expands in Singapore: Bavarian innovation meets Asian elite!
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) has announced that TUM Asia will in future function as the location of the Bavarian University and Innovation Center Asia-Pacific (BayAP). This represents a significant step in the international focus of the university, which has been active in Singapore for over 22 years. TUM Asia is the first German academic institution abroad that has been offering a combination of German engineering education with Asian relevance since its founding in 2002. Over 3,000 students from more than 45 countries have been trained here, of which over 2,200 alumni have successfully completed their programs. More than 600 students are currently enrolled and benefit from the many programs on offer.
TUM Asia recently relocated to the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) campus and the new Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) campus. The teaching includes two bachelor's and five master's degree programs, which are offered in collaboration with renowned partner institutions such as the National University of Singapore (NUS) and NTU. These initiatives ensure practical training that meets the needs of the industry.
Goals of BayAP
The Bavarian University and Innovation Center Asia-Pacific aims to promote international academic collaboration and create synergies between Bavarian and Singaporean universities and their start-up and innovation ecosystems. A close connection is particularly sought in the areas of DeepTech, innovation and entrepreneurship. TUM President Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann highlights the importance of this expansion for the university's internationalization strategy and emphasizes the shared innovation culture of Bavaria and Singapore.
BayAP is supported by various institutions, including the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). This underlines the high regard that TUM Asia and the new center enjoy in international education issues.
Integration into international university collaborations
In recent years, German universities have become increasingly involved in international university collaborations. This is happening against the background that transnational education (TNB) is becoming an important part of internationalization strategies. In 2013, the Code for German University Projects Abroad was adopted, which sets minimum qualitative academic and ethical requirements. These requirements must be adhered to by both German universities and foreign partners and position the universities as quality-conscious and interculturally sensitive players in global educational competition.
The establishment of the BayAP and the role of TUM Asia are not only steps to strengthen academic collaboration, but also milestones for promoting research and innovation in the region. The initiatives combine academic excellence with practical applications and offer students the opportunity to develop in a dynamic environment.
At a time when global exchange and international cooperation are becoming increasingly important, TUM and its international partners are setting standards for future higher education and research.
