TUM is Germany's number 1: record position in the QS ranking!

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) has once again achieved an outstanding position in the university ranking. It currently occupies 22nd place in the QS World University Rankings, which represents a notable increase of almost 40 positions over the last ten years. This means that TUM has been the best university in Germany for eleven years now. Professor Thomas F. Hofmann, President of TUM, described this placement as confirmation of the outstanding achievements of the university community. In his statement, he particularly emphasizes the intensive connection between the disciplines in research and teaching, which distinguishes TUM from other universities.

The broad spectrum of subjects at TUM includes technological sciences, natural sciences, medicine as well as economics and social sciences. This diversity is seen as a central factor in the attractiveness of the university. Another notable feature of TUM is its role as a place of exchange for business, politics and society. The partnerships with leading global tech companies and the TUM Venture Labs for start-ups demonstrate the university's commitment to promoting innovation and entrepreneurship.

Support from politics

Bavaria's Science Minister Markus Blume (CSU) congratulated the TUM and praised the Free State of Bavaria as a "serial winner" in the higher education sector. TUM is not only the best university in Germany, but also the best in the European Union in the QS ranking. Blume emphasized that no German university has ever performed better and attributed the success to long-term political strategies and investments in technology and talent.

The QS ranking, which is created by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, is based on various criteria, including the quality of the universities, citations of studies, the student-teacher ratio and the success of the graduates. The ranking is considered one of the most recognized in the world, alongside the “THE World University Ranking” and the “Academic Ranking of World Universities” (Shanghai Ranking), in which TUM ranks 47th. In the THE ranking, TUM is in 26th place and is classified as the best university in the EU.

Additional insights and reviews

In addition to the QS and THE rankings, the StudyCheck Award an interesting perspective. This independent university ranking in Germany, which is carried out by Germany's largest university rating portal, annually awards the most popular universities. The basis for the ranking are reports that were published on StudyCheck.de in 2024.

The score, which determines the placement of the universities, is made up of a star rating and the recommendation rate of the students. In this way, universities with a larger number of reviews are preferred, while reviews that violate the conditions of participation are not published. In 2024, 11.5% of the submitted reviews were not published and are therefore not included in the calculation.

TUM's successes, especially in international comparison, reflect not only the quality of education, but also the innovative strength and commitment of the entire university community in Munich, which is viewed as one of the most dynamic innovation ecosystems.
