Ukrainian students in Germany: Help from the Möller Foundation!

The Dietrich and Elke Möller Foundation has been supporting Ukrainian students at the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) since 2022. The aim of this foundation is to offer young people in crisis situations an academic perspective. A central element of support is the one-year scholarships, which provide Ukrainian students with financial relief and offer mentoring.

Yaroslava Larionova, a master's student in the Human Rights program, has been enjoying the benefits of a scholarship from the Möller Foundation since October 2024. She emphasizes that the funding allowed her to focus more intensively on her studies and writing her thesis. The support also enabled her to complete an internship at the Ukrainian human rights organization “Center for Civil Liberties,” which strengthened her activism.

Scholarship and personal development

Larionova applied for the scholarship because of the foundation's special commitment to Ukrainian students. She plans to return to Ukraine after completing her master's degree to continue advocating for human rights. In March 2025 she took part in an excursion to Geneva, where she gained insights into the work of the UN. In the past, she was active in the “KIEC European Club” in Ukraine from 2015 to 2021, where she campaigned for human rights education and the integration of displaced people.

Other Möller Foundation scholarship holders also report on their positive experiences. Ihor Horishnyi, who is in the 7th semester of studying human medicine, expresses his gratitude for the financial support that helps him continue his studies. Yaroslav Fedorchuk, a master's student in International Business Studies, emphasizes the importance of funding for his academic and voluntary work.

Objective of the KNU-FAU alliance

The Möller Foundation was founded in 2019 with the aim of offering Ukrainian students financial independence. Part of the strategy is the KNU-FAU alliance between Kiyev National University and FAU, which aims to strengthen the Ukrainian higher education system, which has been severely affected by the war. Every year the foundation awards four scholarships to Ukrainian students at FAU, who each receive 625 euros per month.

In addition to the scholarship opportunities at FAU, there are other programs aimed at Ukrainian students in Germany. Loud GFPS Students can receive monthly scholarships of 992 euros and spend a semester studying at a German university. These programs provide not only financial resources, but also enrollment support and events that promote academic and cultural experiences.

The application process for these scholarships requires that applicants are under 26 years old, have a residential study place and have verifiable knowledge of German. The requirements for reintegration into civil society as well as commitment to democratic structures and the European idea are also particularly important.

Through the combination of scholarships, mentoring and a broad support network, the supported students hope to not only secure their academic education, but also to make viable contacts for their professional future. These initiatives and offers are an example of solidarity support at a time when many young Ukrainians are facing enormous challenges.
