UniBw Munich: Leader in the 2025 equality ranking!
The Competence Center for Women in Science and Research (CEWS) at the GESIS Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences published its latest university ranking on July 10, 2025, which focuses on gender equality aspects. This ranking has been compiled every two years since 2003 and offers a comprehensive comparison of the equality successes of universities in Germany. In the current analysis, the University of the Bundeswehr Munich (UniBw M) stands out as one of the front runners.
In the 2025 ranking, UniBw M achieved a remarkable score of eleven out of twelve possible points. This represents significant progress in equality and reflects the university's ongoing efforts to increase the proportion of women in professorships. Particularly noteworthy is the increase in the proportion of women in professorships from 14.61% in 2018 to 21.61% in 2023.
Successes and strategies of UniBw M
The civilian equal opportunities officer Pamela Koch and her team made a decisive contribution to this success. In her words, close cooperation with the university management, the academic department and the administration is the key to successfully implementing equality strategies. The initiatives and projects to promote female careers, structural measures and awareness programs are central elements of the gender equality strategy at UniBw M.
The university has set itself ambitious goals for the coming years. The aim is to increase and maintain the proportion of female professors to at least 25 to 30%. In the MINT area, the focus is particularly on attracting more female doctoral students and female postdocs.
Comparison with other universities
In contrast to UniBw M, the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) shows a mixed picture. In the CEWS university rankings 2025, it reached rank group 5 out of a total of 11 and achieved 8 out of a possible 12 points. The main reason for this ranking is the lower proportion of women in postdocs and professorships, despite a positive development in the proportion of women in professorships since 2018.
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is also in group 6 and only scores 7 out of 12 points. In a nationwide comparison, Bavaria belongs to ranking group 5 with a proportion of women of 24.2% in professorships, which represents an improvement compared to 2023, where the university was still in ranking group 7.
| college | Ranking group | Points |
|---|---|---|
| UniBw M | Top group | 11 out of 12 |
| LMU | 5 out of 11 | 8 out of 12 |
| TUM | 6 | 7 out of 12 |
With its methodology, which has been used for 20 years, the CEWS university ranking aims to provide high-quality data on gender equality at universities in Germany. This unanimously accompanying instrument, supplemented by competitions and evaluations, offers a valuable basis for the strategic planning of equality measures.
The work of UniBw M is highlighted as exemplary and represents a positive incentive for other universities to rethink their own equality strategies and, if necessary, improve them. With the increasing awareness of equality in science there is hope that further progress can be achieved.
