University of the Bundeswehr Munich celebrates successful doctorates

On June 28, 2025, a celebratory graduation ceremony took place in the Casino of the University of the Bundeswehr Munich (UniBw M), which honored the commitment and achievements of 30 doctoral candidates from all faculties. President Prof. Eva-Maria Kern and Vice President Prof. Geralt Siebert honored the graduates, who experienced the celebrations together with their relatives and carers. The President's celebratory words emphasized the perseverance, the time invested and the dedication put into research. Prof. Siebert recalled that a doctorate represents an important academic milestone.

During the ceremony, the doctoral recipients not only received a decorative certificate, but also an Athene pin, which symbolizes their connection to UniBw M. Dr. Esther Moszeik also presented her research results on the effects of Yoga Nidra meditation. To lighten up the event, she invited those present to a short meditation.

Musical accompaniment and support

The celebration was enriched by a musical performance by Prof. Cornelius Greither and his son Nikolaus Greither, both of whom played the piano. This musical setting gave the event a special touch and created a festive atmosphere. The celebration was made possible through the support of the Friends of the University of the Bundeswehr e.V., which is committed to promoting science and research.

The importance of a promotion is underlined by current statistics. In 2021, a total of 5,505 doctoral students received their doctorates in North Rhine-Westphalia, followed by Bavaria with 4,946 doctorates. Interestingly, only 196 people completed their doctorates in Saarland, which is the lowest number among the federal states. Relatively speaking, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania stands out, where 26.7 percent of master's graduates received a doctorate, which is well above the national average of 19.5 percent.

Another aspect that should not go unnoticed is the proportion of women among doctoral graduates in Germany. While in the city states of Hamburg, Berlin and Bremen the proportion of women is around 50 percent, in Schleswig-Holstein it is around 54 percent. In contrast, the proportion of female doctorates in Saarland is comparatively low at just under 41 percent. This shows the different gender dynamics in the individual federal states.
