UniWein 2024: Würzburg’s wine dream from the Old University!

The Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg has created a new wine together with the Staatliches Hofkeller: the first UniWein. The Silvaner is now available in the university shop, in the Hofkeller and in selected specialist shops. The special thing about this wine is that “UniWein 2024” marks the start of an annual limited collector’s edition that is characterized by its combination of science and wine culture.

With its modern and aromatic expansion, the Silvaner appeals to connoisseurs and lovers. Each edition of UniWein also comes with a label that shows an important university building. For the year 2024, the motif of the historic old university and the new church adorns the label. The University of Würzburg reports that the initiative to create this wine comes from the long tradition of the university and its connection to viticulture.

Historical roots and viticulture in Würzburg

The roots of wine growing in Würzburg go back to the year 779, when the first written reference to wine growing in the region was documented. Already at this time, wineries like the Bürgerspital played an important role in viticulture. WürzburgWiki highlights that France has been an important wine region since the times of Emperor Probus.

Viticulture has evolved over the centuries. In 1460, the Würzburg city council issued a purity law for wine that was intended to ensure quality. Today the Franconian region is the sixth largest wine-growing region in Germany with around 6,063 hectares of cultivated area, with around 80% of the wines produced being white wines.

University and wine history

The Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg was originally founded in 1402 as the “High School of Würzburg” to meet the need for lawyers and clergy. Prince-Bishop Johann von Egloffstein was significantly involved in its founding. UniWithHistory documented that the university was repeatedly linked to wine growing throughout its history - from 1582 onwards Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn gave it land with vineyards, which later fell back to the Bavarian state.

Despite the loss of its wineries, the university has taken big steps in wine culture. University wines have been offered several times in the past, most recently in 2018. Beyond the UniWein 2024, the tradition remains alive and will be carried forward by the new Silvaner, which is likely to attract attention far beyond the borders of Würzburg.

Overall, UniWein not only reflects the connection between science and tradition, but also the history of the university and the city of Würzburg, making it a valuable cultural asset in the region.
