Würzburg honors teaching stars: 20 awards for excellence in teaching!

On April 3, 2025, a celebratory award ceremony took place in Würzburg, at which the Bavarian Minister of Science awarded Markus Blume for outstanding achievements in university teaching. This award, which has been awarded for the 22nd time, is worth 5,000 euros each and is aimed at lecturers who achieved particular success in teaching in 2019 and 2020.

In his speech, Markus Blume emphasized the central importance of good teaching for the future excellence of universities. This is not only praise for the excellent teachers, but also a sign of the appreciation of teaching as an equal part of academic training. The winners were nominated by their home universities, with students being involved in the decision-making process.

Excellent lecturers at TUM

The 20 award winners also include two outstanding lecturers from the Technical University of Munich (TUM): Antonius Schneider from the TUM School of Medicine and Health and Friedrich Esch from the TUM School of Natural Sciences. In addition to the financial award, both received a certificate of honor for their excellent teaching, presented by Gerhard Müller, the Vice President for Studies and Teaching at TUM.

This recognition is not only a personal success for the two lecturers, but also reflects the high quality of teaching at TUM. In addition to Schneider and Esch, other teachers from their schools were nominated for the award: Nicola Breugst, Stephan Günther, Orkan Okan and Stefan Recksiegel.

Other award winners and context of the award

The “Prize for Good Teaching” is awarded annually by the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art and underlines the equivalence of teaching and research at Bavarian universities. This initiative provides a platform to appreciate teachers who have demonstrated outstanding achievements over a period of at least two academic years.

This year's awards ceremony was particularly relevant as it was postponed several times due to the corona pandemic. The award winners come from various universities in Bavaria, including Augsburg, Bamberg, Bayreuth, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Munich, Passau, Regensburg and Würzburg, which illustrates the diversity and competition in the nationwide university landscape.

This award not only recognizes the commitment of the teachers, but also the effort to constantly improve and innovate teaching in order to offer students the best possible education.
