Würzburg's women's footballers defend their title in Italy!

The footballers of the Würzburg competition community have once again secured the title of the European University Football Championships after an impressive tournament run. The championship took place in Camerino, Italy from July 27 to August 3, 2025. This means that the Würzburg women have won this prestigious title for the second time in a row, having already triumphed in 2024. This year WG Würzburg competed with a women's and a men's team, with the men's team finishing fifth after a strong tournament in 2023, where they won the title, and a second place in 2024.

The players under coach Gernot Haubenthal showed an outstanding performance in the preliminary round and secured three wins. The team successfully prevailed in the quarter-finals before defeating the team from Montpellier (France) 1-0 in the semi-finals. The big highlight was the final, in which the Würzburg women won 3-1 against the University of Frankfurt. The support of the men's team, who cheered loudly for their colleagues on the day, added to the great atmosphere.

Men's team and individual awards

The WG Würzburg men's team suffered a defeat against the University of Rouen (France) in the quarterfinals, which eliminated them from the title race. As a result, however, they found themselves in the placement games and ultimately finished the tournament in fifth place. Simon Schäffer, a player from the men's team, was named the best player of the entire tournament, which underlined his individual class.

The European Universities Football Championships were first held in 2003 and have since developed into an important competition for university football in Europe. The event is coordinated by the European University Sports Association and took place in Camerino in 2025, where both the significant participation and passionate support from fans were clearly visible. These championships are a platform for many young talents and offer a stage for international exchange in sport.

A context of the women's football championships

In the context of women's football, it is worth noting that the UEFA European Women's Football Championship, launched in 1984, plays a significant role in the development of women's football in Europe. England are the reigning European champions after beating Germany in a thrilling final in 2022. This competition, held every four years, has helped to highlight the interest and competitiveness of women's football teams. The next European Championship is planned for 2025 in Switzerland.

The Würzburg women's successes at the European University Football Championships are further evidence of the growing support and commitment to women's football at all levels, from amateur to professional levels. Given the positive development and talent that the teams are producing, women's football will certainly continue to be a focus in the coming years.
